Reggie Bush Reclaims 2005 Heisman Trophy After a Decade: Heisman Trust Announces Decision”

After having to give up the trophy in 2010, Reggie Bush is now receiving his 2005 Heisman Memorial Trophy again.

The decision to restore Bush was made by the Heisman Trust after careful consideration and careful observation of the “enormous changes” that have occurred in the collegiate football scene, according to a press statement posted on Heisman.com on Wednesday.

“We are ecstatic to have Reggie Bush return to the Heisman family in honor of his collegiate achievements,” The Heisman Trophy Trust president, Michael Comerford, stated in a statement.

With a photo of his Heisman Trophy, Bush posted on Instagram with the caption, “No one can take from you what God has for you.”

Bush earned the Heisman Trophy in 2005, which is given to the best collegiate football player every year, when he ran for 1,740 yards on 200 rushes and scored 18 touchdowns overall while playing for the University of Southern California.

After an NCAA investigation revealed that Bush had received advantages totaling several thousand dollars and a car that were not permitted at the time, he willingly gave up the prized award in 2010 and was declared ineligible as of 2004.

Bush has maintained in the past that he wasn’t paid to play football at USC and that the NCAA defamed him.

College players are now eligible to get paid for their likeness, name, and image—a practice known as NIL.

“Reggie Bush Expresses Gratitude and Resilience Following Heisman Trophy Reinstatement”

Following the implementation of NIL, Bush stated to The Athletic in 2020 that “[The NCAA] had to be forced into this.” Regretfully, we are a very reactive nation. We don’t take initiative. Prior to individuals wanting to alter it or realizing that there is an injustice, something has to happen.

In a statement sent by his agents, Bush said, “I am grateful to be recognized as the recipient of the Heisman Trophy once again.” In addition to being a personal win, my reinstatement is a testament to the unwavering work of my advocates and supporters, who have stuck with me during this difficult path.

“I want it to be very obvious that I have always behaved honorably and in compliance with the NCAA’s rules and guidelines. The accusations made against me lacked proof and were false, so I’m glad the truth is coming to light at last.

With eight Heisman Trophy winners in college football since Bush’s return, USC now holds the record.

“For doing what’s right and welcoming a storied member of our history back into the fold,” former NFL quarterback and 2012 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel hailed the Trust.

Throughout this process, other people spoke up in support of Reggie just because of the sort of person he is. Manziel posted on X, now known as Twitter, saying, “I look forward to being on that stage with you this December @ReggieBush you deserve it.”

Bush spent 11 seasons in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints, Miami Dolphins, Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers, and Buffalo Bills after spending three seasons at USC. In 134 regular season games, he ran for 5,490 yards and 36 touchdowns and caught 477 receptions for 3,598 yards and 18 touchdowns. In Super Bowl XLIV, Bush contributed to the Saints’ first Vince Lombardi trophy victory.

Though his Heisman had been voided, Bush was still elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2023 and his resolve to win back his award had not lessened. In August 2023, Bush declared he was going to sue the NCAA for slander, hoping to get his records restored and perhaps even reclaim his trophy.

Now, the Heisman Trust will restore Bush and return his trophy on Wednesday, even if that lawsuit hasn’t been settled. It’s unclear how this will affect Bush’s position in the case or with the NCAA.
