From CCNY to Capitol Hill: Alan Hantman’s Journey and Achievements

Hantman was a member of the inaugural class of the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture at CCNY. He graduated from CCNY with a Bachelor of Science in 1964 and a Bachelor of Architecture in 1966. In 1979, he went on to the Graduate Center, CUNY, to get a Master of Urban Planning. He is now a member of the Spitzer School Dean’s Advisory Council.

Hantman, a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA), was named the 10th Architect of the U.S. Capitol by President Bill Clinton in 1997, and the U.S. Senate unanimously approved him for a 10-year term. He oversaw the management and maintenance of all Capitol Hill buildings and grounds, oversaw the design and construction of the largest expansion to the Capitol in its history, and employed 2,300 people.

Alan Hantman: Shaping the Capitol’s Legacy and Beyond

Leading the U.S. Capitol’s architectural, historic preservation, engineering, renovation, new construction, and facilities management department, he oversaw the Thurgood Marshall Federal Judiciary Building, the National Garden, the U.S. Botanic Garden, the Capitol Power Plant, the Supreme Court, the Library of Congress, all Congressional office buildings, and nearly 300 acres of historic Capitol grounds.

The nine biggest expansions to the Capitol since President George Washington first chose its design in 1793 were planned, designed, and built under Hantman’s direction. The three-story underground enlargement is located beneath the Capitol. Since the Dome and Capitol expansions were constructed more than 150 years ago, this enlargement represents the Office of the Architect of the Capitol’s most important undertaking. In 2007, he announced his retirement.

Prior Rudin Scholars have included director Ric Burns, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, author Mo Yan, former Congresswoman Patricia Schroeder, author Walter Mosley, ’91MA, former NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw, and former CBS News anchor Walter Cronkite.
